June 13, 2019. Vermont Open Studio Report

Christine Billis

Hello!

Every Memorial Day weekend Vermont artists and crafters open their studios (or congregate in a central location) to show our wares and teach the public about what we do. For years I’ve joined other artists at the Fuller House in Huntington Village, showing and selling whatever I‘ve been making. This year I draped rugs over the porch railings, hung skirts, dresses, and scarves on racks, and put hats into a basket…then settled in with my amazing knitting friend Sara on the porch and greeted folks. During Saturday and Sunday I made nearly $600. Half the skirts and a third of the scarves went. And 2 hats. It was very encouraging.

I’d launched chrisbillisdesigns.com the previous week and spent some time after the sale working through some problems. Then I got back into knitting rugs. Finished a purple cotton, made a blue cotton, and have just started a pink/red/peachy one. I figured out it takes 8 hours to stitch together a 30 inch rug with 2 strips. The amount of time to sort, cut, and knit? Working 6 hours a day I can make a rug in a week.

Welcome to my first blog posting! I’ve been knitting rugs. Here are some pictures:

These two rugs are made of cotton jersey from my collection of t-shirts and other used clothing. I cut strips of the cloth and knot them together for my “yarn”, then knit long snakes starting at one stitch and increasing to 6 or 7 across. Slipping the first stitch on the inside edge makes for a gentle curve and easier spiraling. I love the interplay of darks and lights, neutrals and big chroma.

Below is a collection of wool rugs I knitted from felted sweaters.
